Final Product - Opening Sequence

Rating

Through looking at the certificate information on the BBFC website, we have come to the conclusion that our film will be rated fifth-teen in cinemas.

How does your meda project represent particular social groups?

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

K: We made a film company logo and even made it look animated through iMovie by putting a fog effect over the image, making it looks more mysterious and scary.
C: The credits were in a simple white font at the bottom of the screen like most other films. This is because it is easy to see even though it is not the focus point of the shot.
E: We used a high angle when the character is running in the woods. We felt that it made her look vulnerable and though we don't see anyone running after her, the handheld shots and higher angles following her suggests that she is the victim and a killer is after her.
K: Another high angle is used on Lily when she wakes up, which is almost oppressive and shows that she's insignificant. We didn't do the point of view shot like we planned to do when she wakes up because it looked odd and too shakey. So we tried other ways to position the camera, for example, on her level, but we had the view as if we're standing over her which is almost suffocating.
C: We used a low angle on the character Kate - the girl who gives Lily a bad look - to show that she is insignificant when compared to her.
E: We used an ellipses by fading out when she walks to school and fading in when she arrives to school.
B: A common point of feeback we recieved was that te film ended suddenly. But we think that as it is supposed to be the first two minutes of an hour or two long film, it shouldn't conclude itself like a trailer. Instead, it should just cut to the next scene.

How did you address/attract your audience?

Feedback

The image on the left contains points of feedback we recieved from our media class. Like mentioned in the evaluation video (discussing the question "In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?"), most people mentioned that our final product ended suddenly, and though we agree that it did, we feel that it should end suddenly and move on to the next scene (if there was another 118 minutes left of the film). Though what we regret about our final product is that we did not include a reaction shot of Lily when she slams her locker shut. Thus, it might have not seemed to have ended so suddenly to the viewers.

Title/Logo

How i made the title:

Kirsty created the title in Photoshop. She used a downloaded font called broken74 because she thought it reflected the approaching horror of the film.

The line underneath the text was part of a downloaded title. Kirsty changed the colour to a dark red that looked like blood. She then added a black outer glow around it to make it stand out and look creepier. She included the line because she felt it gave a sense of finality and strength to the title, increasing the tension of the film.

She added a dark blue background then put a white radial gradient, at 61% opacity into the middle of it, that created a faint white circle behind the title, i.e. it lighted up the background behind the text. This again made it stand out more and also gave it a dark and sinister look.

She drew a shape that resembled blood dripping into a puddle, and then placed it underneath the letter V so that it looked like the blood was pouring off of the letter. She then made two little droplet shapes so that it looked like blood was dripping off of the other side of the V as well which made it seem a bit more realistic. This made it scarier and gave an insight into what might happen later in the film.

Then she brought the letter V in front of the line so that the blood effect would work properly and so that it stood out more. I then added a bevel and emboss to the text, line and dripping blood shape to make it stand out more and create a terrifying effect.
Below is a picture of the finished title:

Once we added the title to our product we made the title sharpen when the music that we added over the top of it reached its peak to add to the effect.

How we made our company logo:
Kirsty used this part of the new line cinema logo design and got rid of everything else in the image in Illustrator, so Kirsty ended up with this:

Kirsty then transferred this image to Photoshop.
Kirsty found the picture below on the internet then flipped it horizontally so that it faced the right and resized it to suit the image of the filmstrip. She then deleted the white background so that the camera was all that was left.

Kirsty wanted a dramatic sky effect in the background to add an eerie mood to the logo. This also reflects the type of films our company would make – horror films. She used a layer mask in Photoshop by dragging the cursor from bottom to the top of the page. It starts out white so that the ground disappears and gradually starts to go transparent at around half way up the page. So it still allows the sky to be seen but not the ground (which is what she wanted).

She created the filmstrip manually on Photoshop by making a black rectangle then putting smaller rectangles in the middle of the big one, but changing the colour to white. Then she made smaller squares to put above and below the white rectangles and made these white as well. She changed the opacity of the small squares and smaller rectangles to 5% so that rather than being completely transparent it gives the appearance of a real filmstrip.

Kirsty then added the text – a single letter, in capitals and herald font so that it is bold and stands out, to each small rectangle. She changed the colour of the text to a wood background, then added a pattern overlay filter, under bevel and emboss, of a fire effect.

She put a white background as a mask over the top of the sky but behind each letter to make them stand out. She then applied a wave filter by clicking on filter then picking distort from the drop down menu then clicking on wave on the second drop down menu.
So by doing all of this she created this film strip:

Kirsty then used the smudge tool on the end of the film strip by clicking on the black film strip and dragging it into the camera lens. She did this in order to give the effect of the filmstrip emerging from the camera.

She added the text shown below in herald font so that it stood out and put it at the bottom next to the new line cinema logo underneath the camera and filmstrip.

Below is an image of the finished logo:

Once we put this into IMovieHD we added a dark fog to make it look animated and also to make it scarier.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

K: Like many other media products, such as Kill Bill, which was one of our main influences, we used a flash forwards scene that was in black and white. We decided to use the black and white effect in order to clearly show the distinction between the future and the present.
B: When we tried putting the opening credits over the scenes in our main character's house, they distorited the sound so that it was not in sync with the video. We realised that this was not our fault and, in fact, it was a glitch in the program. Because of this, we had to extract the sound and just match it with out main character's actions - the main action being her turning the radio on with a click. However, the credits had inserted noise that we had originally cut out of the film, that we did not want there. So we had to completely mute the sound for this scene and only allow the click to play. This didn't matter so much because thankfully, none of the sound was crucial.
C: We learnt how to change the volume of the sound because of this. This proved to be quite tricky, but at the end we were able to do this.
E: We couldn't rely on the tripod keeping the camera straight when filming the school sign as it was a windy day. So we tried to film at least two seconds of a straight shot of the sign and then used a still frame of this shot in our final product.
K: We found it extremely difficult to find non-copyrighted music that would actually suit the scene of our main character turning on her radio. So we decided to go on Garageband and make our own song using the program's many beats and tunes. This turned out successful because the music is simple and doesn't sound too depressing or too happy. We also tried to match the music with the end of the scene by making them both fade out together.

We also used the programe iMovie to do a voiceover of Lily breathing heavily, this was one of the sounds we had over the flashforward scene.

We used the two programs iTunes and GarageBand, these were used in the process of making the soundtrack of our opening sequence.

My group and I also used the internet a lot during the whole filming process for research. We regularly visited websites such as Youtube. This was to find our influences and to analyse other opening sequences of films. We also regularly visited the search engine Google. This was used for general research and also finding pictures for our research process. Google also help us to find our non-copyrighted music of our heart beat sound affect.

What do you feel you have learnt in the progression from the preliminary task to your full product?

K: There was a main problem that we attempted to overcome, that we experienced in our preliminary task - the sound. In our preliminary task, the sound was too quiet because the only microphone we were using was on the camera, which was too far away from our actors.
B: In our full product, we had no dialogue to worry about so this wasn't a potential problem. However we were still conscious of certain diagetic sounds that we included in our opening sequence.
There was also background sound that we had not desired to appear in our preliminary task, so we were very careful when filming out full product.
E: We learnt how to do match on action shots proficiently. The match on actions we used in out preliminary task turned out very well, so we were confident enough to use a couple in out opening sequence when the opportunities arose.
C: We aslo learnt how to use special effects on iMovie HD. The preliminary task that we did, enabled us to explors this and the different possiblilities within this. In our preliminary taks, we used a slow motion of a pen dropping, this persuaded us to use a flash forward in our real product and for it to be in black and white.

Who would be the audience for your media production?

This is Omar Hay, he is twenty three and lives in Streatham, London. He is of Black British origin and works as an administrator and Foxtons estate-agents. Omar likes to wear jeans with t-shirts, shirts and jackets. He also like wear trainers or plimsolls.

Omar is very sociable and likes to go out in his spare time. One of the things he enjoys doing when he goes out is go shopping with his friends. He regularly purchases item from stores such as Top Man, Office UCS, Burton, River Island, Footlocker and Next.

As well as shopping in his spare time he also likes, playing football, going clubbing, going out to eat and going to the cinemas. When clubbing he likes to places such as Tiger Tiger, Lloyds and Bar Seven.

In his spare time when going out to eat he would either go with his friends or his girlfriend. Generally he enjoys going to restaurants like, TGI Fridays, Frankie's and Bennie's, Toby Carvery and Harvester.

Omar enjoys mainly scary, action or comedy films when he goes to the cinema with his friends. Some of the past films he has watched and enjoyed in the past are Bourne Ultimatum, Mirrors, Be Cool, Rush Hour, Role Models, The Matrix, Paranormal Activity, The Omen, Hangover, 28 Days Later, American Pie and Scary Movie.

Omar like very recent music; the type of music in the charts today. He mainly listens to RnB, Hip Hop, Rap, Pop and House music. He regularly listens to the radio in his car however does not listen to it outside his car. The station he likes are KISS 100, Radio One and Choice FM.

In his spare time after work Omar also like watching television. The show he enjoys watching are CSI, The Fresh Prince of Belair, Law and Order, Heroes, 24 and The Wire.

This is a collage i have made that represents all Omar's likes.

We think Omar and other boy like him will watch our film because most people in their early twentys are set out to have fun and do something exciting. We feel as our move is a horror it will create excitement and in doing so will be fun. Therefore appealing to Omar and other people similar to him.

Who would be the audience for your media production?

This is Taylor Smith, she is a 17 year old sixth-former who is planning on attending university next year.

She is a quiet, hard-working girl who, during the weekends, works part-time as a receptionist and also goes out with her close friends to concerts, the cinema or shopping.

Her favourite films range from thrillers to fantasy such as the Lovely Bones, the Saw series, Donnie Darko, the Sixth Sense, Stardust, the Lord of the Rings, and Halloween.

Alice's taste in music ranges from rock to pop, and listens to radio stations such as Radio 1, X FM and Capital FM.

Her favourite television programmes are Supernatural, Lost, Law & Order and Heroes.

We think that Alice is quite representative to the type of girls who would watch this film because she seems to like violence and gore, but also films that have a psychological element to it - and we think that though our film is not exactly a psychological thriller, it is close and contains violence. Furthermore, Alice in a way relates to the main character Lily, in that she is a quiet girl, though she seems to have more of a social life than Lily.

Who would be the audience for your media production?

This is Ryan Connor he is sixteen, lives in the suburbs of London and of white British origin. He wears tracksuits bottoms or jeans. He also wears trainers and coloured t-shirts. Ryan goes Croydon College where he is studying PE, Media and Sociology.

In his spear time he likes playing a variety of sports, such as football, ruby and basketball. On the weekends he likes going out with his friends. When he does this Ryan and his friends like to go shopping, get something to eat or go cinemas.

The type of shops Ryan likes purchasing clothing from are, River Island, JD Sports, Blue Inc, Sports World, Four Feet and JJB. He also like to eat in restaurants such as Nandoes, TGI Fridays, KFC, Chinese restaurants and McDonald's.

The films he has enjoyed in the past have mainly either been action films, scary films or teenager representation films. For example, Freddie vs Jason, KidultHood, AdultHood, Scream, Wanted, Resident Evil, Taken, Sixteen, Paranormal Activity, Training Day, Bad Boys and The Omen. On the odd occasion he does like watching comedies such as Hangover, Liar Liar and What Happens in Vegas.

He also likes to watch television in his spare time after college. The shows he enjoys are Skins, Inbertweeners, Flash Forward, 24 and Simpsons.

Ryan likes up to date modern music, the type of music in the charts. For example Hip Hop, rap, RnB and House. Although Ryan listens to music a lot he rarely listens to the radio. However on the odd occasion that the does he like listening to station such as Capital FM, KISS 100, Radio 1 and Choice FM.

This is a collage i have created of all Ryan's likes.

We think that our film will appeal to Ryan and other similar boys to him because he is a typical adrenalin driven, slightly imerture, teenaged boy. Therefore as our film will create adrenalin and excitement, due to it being a horror, Ryan and boys like him will want to watch our film.

Rough Cut

This is a rough cut of our opening sequence, we have a lot more to edit in it to make it look better, flow better and create the impact we want on the audiences. One of the things we are planning to do is to shorten the opening shots of Lilly running through the woods. This is because we feel as it is, at the moment it does not have a very fast pace and by doing this to the show we can get the pace we intended. We also need to insert some dijetic sound over this scene to make it seem more sinister, because at the moment you can hear birds singing which is giving the scene an impress that is a nice happy scene. My group and i have came to the conclusion that the dijetic sound the is scene should be a heart beating which gets faster and a recording of Elly breathing heavily.

During this first scene we are also planning to cut the shots up into smaller shots, and randomly move the order of them. This is because we feel it will look more professional because it will constantly be switching to different view/perspectives of Lilly running; and also increase the pace of the scene. We have not entirely stuck to our story board in this scene because we have included some more shots such as a long shot and a high angle shot.

For the bedroom scene we also need to add music to it when Lilly switches on the radio. We have decided to use the music we made from the program Garage Band, that atchally play toward the end of the scene. We need to extend the music and place it so it comes on exactly when Lilly presses the radio button. Viering from our story board again we have not done the point of view shot of Lilly waking up and rubbing here eyes in this scene. This because we were finding it difficult to make it look realistic.

In our final scene of Lilly at her lockers we also need to shorten these scenes. This is because as it is the scenes do to flow as well as they could, however if we shorten them we feel it will solve this problem.

Music and Editing Process

As the deadline for our media film draws nearer it is becoming urgent for my group and I to come up with our non-copyrighted music for our film. We have made a instrumental using the program Garage Band for Lilly's bedroom scene, but we were not sure if it was the right sound for the scene. Therefore I made another instrumental in the hope to find a sound that would fit the scene better.

However we also felt this did not fit the scene asweel. In the end we decided to use the original instrumental we made fist because we felt we could not make another as good as this one and because we need to music so our edditing process could progress.

We also were finding it difficult to get music for our first scene the flash forward. However we decided to use the program Garage Band to get a drum sound and have the sound effect of a heart beating.

Below is the 'BECK Film Production' logo that Kirsty made. We have included this in our film and have tried to make it less like a picture and more animated by have a dark fog go over it in our film.

The is the title of our film that Kirsty also made. We have also tried to meke this look less like a picture in our film and more like a animated sequence by have music over it and have it darken and brighten.

5th March - Filming Day 5

During this filming session we went to film our the opening scene that is a flash forward. This is when our character Lilly is running though the wood trying to get away from the killer.

previously we had discussed where and how we were going the film this scene in class. This made it very easy and quick when it came to actually shooting it because we all had the same clear idea of what every shot should look like.

However when we were filming our final shot of Lilly turning at the camera and screaming we came up against a very amusing problem. This was because were we were filming was directly next to a childrens park and when ever Elly (Lilly) screamed the children screamed back forcing us to have to re-shoot it.

We also found the hand-held shot of Lilly's back while she running through the wood difficult to shoot. This is because the ground was very hard to run on and our group member Bareen, who we assign to film the shot, found it hard to keep the camera straight and in lime. However we figure out a way she could hot the camera while she was running to get the shot we intended.

Below is a picture of Elly holding the camera. This is when we tried to do the point of view shot of Lilly running in the woods. However we decided not to use it because it do not look a good and realistic as we wanted.

1st March - Filming Day 4

My group and I went back to Elly's house to re-shoot the second and third scenes. We had to re-shoot them because we acidently filmed over these scenes with extra footage we did not want to include in our opening sequence, that was a scene of Lilly going into her kitchen and burning toast.

We re-shooted the bedroom scene of Lilly waking up and going to ther bathroon, the match on action scene of lilly running dow the stairs and, the long shot of her walking down the road. Doing this for the scond time we found it much easier and also found it quicker. We did all our filming for this within a hour where as before this same process took us about three hours.

However my group and I did experience some difficulties when trying to film the shot of Lilly walking down the road. This was due to the wind and the uneven pavements. The wind kept blowing the camera making it wobble during our filming and the uneven pavements made it hare for us to keep the camera straight while we were panning. We tried to do the best we could and in the end we had two shots to choose from that we were satisfied with.

During the filming session we also decided to disgrade the point of view shot of Lilly waking up because we felt the camera movements did not look naturalistic. Overall i personally think this was a good filming session and that we worked well as a team to achieve our goal.

26th February - Filming Day 3

My group and I had to go back to the locker room location where we shot in our first filming session. This was because when we previously did this we ran out of time and was not able to shoot all the shots we needed.

This was very easy and quick because we only needed to film two shots. One of these were of Lilly slamming her locker door shut, and another of Valerie and Sophia turning around to look at Lilly.

Overall this filming session was very simple and not very challenging. However by going back an shooting the same scene it enable us to realise the best way to order our shots for this scene so it can be effective as possible.

16th February - Filming Day 2

The was our second filming session. During this filming session we planned to film all the scene that take place in Lilly's house, these were scenes two, three and four. My group and I were also planning to film the fashforward scene of Lilly running through the wood. However on this day it was rain heavly which prevented us from filming this section.

Above are two images of my group and I filming an extra scene that we were considering to put into the sequence. This was of Lilly making toast in the kitchen and burning it. We wanted to use this extra scene because it would show the audience that she having a bad day. However in the end we dicided not to because as this scene was a last minute idea it was taking too long to film because we had not planned it.

Below are two images of me and Elly trying to film Lilly point of view shot as she wakes up. We tried using various methods to do this shot. One of the ways we tried was by having Elly holding the camera, but we realised it was not looking as we planned. I then tried to film the same shot. However it again did not look as good as we wished. Therefore we decided to scrap the whole shot a try other was of doing this.

11th February - Filiming Day 1

In this filming session we intened on filming our sixth scene of Lilly, when she comes into the school to her locker and when we first introduce the other main actors in our film.

We found filming this scene very hard and frustrating. this is because we were filming in a corridor at school, that meant we had people constantly walking past interrupting our filming. We also found film difficult in the session because there was another media group filming in the corridor whilst we were, so we had to take turns to film our shots which made the filming process longer than we intended.

It was also difficult to get the books to fall out of Lilly's locker. This is because we felt it always looked very fake or dramatic. However continuously trying we managed to get a shot that we were satisfied with.

We did not finish all the shots we wanted to in the session due tho our difficulties. However I feel my group and i worked very well togther in this filming session to over come our obstacles.

Weather for Filming

Before we could start filming we needed to know what the weather conditions were going to be. This is because some of our shots would be filmed outside. We wanted the weather in our opening sequence to be cloudy with sunny intervals; because we thought it would make our opening sequence seem more daunting however still have an element of happiness. Luckily for use the weather conditions sere exactly what we wanted throughout our filming process. This enable us to create the atmosphere we intended.

Shooting Schedule

This is our shooting schedule, we are going to try and make sure we stick to the schedule as best as possible. This is because if we do not our filming may take longer than we and we might not get it finished or have to rush it.

Location Shots

Above is a picture of our group members Elly's house. This is where we are going to film scenes two and three of Lilly waking up and getting ready for school. We decided on this location because we wanted Elly (who plays Lilly) to feel comfortable, because otherwise she would have to be acting in someone else bedroom and may feel uncomfortable doing this. We also chose the location because its not too far from our school and therefore meaning we could easily go back there if we need to.

The two images above are of two locker corridors in our school, that we were considering using for our last scene. The first image is the extension building locker corridor and the second one is the six form common room locker area. We decided to use the extension building locker corridor (the second image) because we thought it looks more like a school than the common room locker area, and also because it has more space therefore making it easier to film.

We initially planned to film in the location of image one, that was right next to our school. However from visiting it a second time we realised it would be very difficult to film in because it was very tight and uneven. Therefore we set out to find another wood location that we could film our flash forward scene in. From asking other school companions we found out that there was also a wood area fifteen minutes walk away from our school. We visited it and came to the conclusion that this was perfect for filming our flash forward scene (image two).

Costume Choice

We have decided that Lily's costume was to be casual, yet smart to show that she is going to school. We chose simple colours for her to wear - black and white - because we think that the black of her coat and skirt reflect the gloom and danger ahead in the film, while her white shirt can reflect on Lily's innocence - even her pyjamas follow this scheme. Furthermore, we think that her outfits are very realistic and normal, so perhaps the audience can imagine the story to be close to reality.

Casting Shots

Elly, who is a fellow member of our group, will be playingthe main character, Lily. We thought that she would be great for this role as she can easily act serious and listens to every idea our group has and plays the role to the best of her ability. Elly is always free during lessons and after school when we need to film so it is easy to film on the days we planned to. Plus she can scream without bursting into laughter!

Another member of our group, Bareen, will be playing the role of Sophia, who is one of the three other main characters who are introduced nearer the end of the opening squence but do not make a proper appearance until later in the film. We decided that the main focus should be on Lily because she would appear throughout the whole film and the other main characters die later in the film. We chose Bareen to play the part because she can act natural and can laugh easily without making it sound fake. Furthermore, she was, like Elly, free to film during lessons so we had plenty of opportunity to film.

Our friend, Marina, is playing Valerie who stands along with Sophia (Bareen) by her locker and laughs at Lily when she drops her books. We chose Marina to play the part because she has an amazing ability to laugh completely naturally at any little thing but can also wait until the appropriate moment. She is also has a very bubbly and enthusiastic personality which suits the character perfectly and so it was easy for her to play the part.

Bryony, another of our friends, is playing Kate, who simply rolls her eyes at Lily for dropping her books. Bryony was free when we needed to film this scene and is great at keeping a straight face and natural look no matter what is going on which is why we pleaded with her (she gave in reletively quickly - that's how good we are) to act in out opening sequence.

We are all very happy with our choices for the cast because all four cast members are of different ethnic groups, therefore giving a wider range of races and therefore can interest a wider audience and all of them were able to play their roles flawlessly with few mishaps.

Storyboard

Below is the first draft of the storyboard for the opening sequence of our film.

This is the storyboard of our opening sequence. This will save us time when it comes to shooting our opening scene because it will enable us to follow the different shots where as making up how we are going to shoot each scene while we are filming.
